Becoming a registered professional engineer in the state of Oregon is a multi-step process which uses education, experience and standardized testing to ensure an individual’s competence to practice engineering.

While many states require a bachelor’s degree from a four-year program for licensure, the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) allows for experience in place of education.  There are also combination options which allow the use of both education and experience as qualification.

In order for an individual to be permitted to use the term “professional engineer” in the state of Oregon, the individual must do the following:

• Successfully pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination
• Successfully pass the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE) examination
• Have a work record of four years or more of technical work or engineering work under the supervision and control of a professional engineer who directs and guides the engineer intern’s preparation, approves the work product and accepts responsibility that the work product is in conformance with standards of professional practice (see Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 672.002, 672.102 and Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 820-010-0010 for more information.)
